Bleed for Good Fiction

Something that is a sure-fire way to get me to drop a book and never finish it is the lack of diverse characters.

Now, I do not necessarily mean race or anything like that.

I mean personality.

I mean relationships.

I mean character development.

A piece of writing advice that, personally, I believe to be the best thing I have ever been given is: “Base your characters on real people: on those you love, on those you hate, on those you want to forget, on the cashier at Walmart, on the guy next to you on the bus.  If you don’t know them, imagine their story.”

I think a lot of Young Adult writers forget that not everyone is a cookie-cutter person.
